Nick’s strategy to create a more powerful, flexible and affordable LMS was to run our system on a MySQL database, which offers high speed, high reliability, wide distribution, and ease of use. Along with the MySQL database, Nick chose a Linux operating system, Apache server, and PHP and Perl programming languages. This combination is referred to as a “LAMP” technology platform.
While LAMP programmers (like Nick) are a rare commodity (higher on the IQ scale than other programmers), LAMP is an elegant and streamlined database application and is used in approximately 10 million installations, including such well-known companies as Yahoo, Google and Craig’s List.
Nick attended University of California, Berkeley, where he studied economics and foreign languages and was a Dean's Scholar.
